In making this collection of Monteverdi’s ‘chamber’ duets, Alan Curtis excludes the sacred duets and those embedded in Monteverdi’s music dramas, leaving an impressive group of twenty-four of Monteverdi’s finest compositions, released here in their entirety for the first time. The programme also includes a selection of trios, the famous Lament of the Nymph and two favourite larger works, ‘Voi ch’ascoltate’ from Selva morale and ‘Or, che ’l ciel’ from the Eighth Book, two of the most remarkable works in the entire repertory of the madrigal.
